One thing that is deeply depressing but so
true is that, true crime never dies. There are people who have been put into
jail for wrongly paying the murders conducted by someone else. There are cases
remaining mysteries in which the murders are still identified even for their
lifetime. True crime in life is no mercy shown in TV series which often show justice
has been done. However, that’s why these true crime documentary films are
created, to tell the truth, to do the justice no matter how hard it is.
1.
Shadow of Truth
Labeled as the most-watched true-crime
shows on Netflix in 2018 and the most important shows in Israeli history, this
one is definitely worth a try to watch. It explores the explosive 2006 murder
case of a 13-year-old girl and the subsequent conviction of a Ukrainian immigrant.
This true crime documentary has raised many doubts concerning Zadorov’s
conviction while exposing flaws in the criminal justice system. The show is also
often compared with another American documentary series Making a Murder
which was released shortly before.
2.
The Keepers
This is a seven-episode American
documentary web series that explores the unsolved murder of nun Sister Cathy Cesnik
who taught English and drama at school and her former student believed that
there was a cover-up by the authorities after Censnik suspected that a priest
at the school Joseph was guilty of sexual abuse of students. Though the death
of Censik remains a mystery, what it does really matter is its aftereffect including
crushing heartbreak and amateur sleuths who seek to crack her case, which is why
this series is produced.
3.
Icarus
Icarus is an American documentary film by
Bryan Fogel who sets out uncover the truth of doping in sports and he also asks
for help of Rodchenkov, the head of the Russian anti-doping laboratory. This
film aims to eliminate the corruption and restore integrity to the international
athletic community, even the whistle-blower now lives in a great danger. Fogel
hopes that this film can wake Russia up about the importance of telling the
truth.
4.
Evil Genius
The TV series show a high-profile incident
in 2003 often referred as the “collar bomb” or “pizza bomb” case as the murder
of Brian is a pizza man who robs a bank with a bomb around his neck. This bizarre,
grim story explores not just the crime behind the crimes, but also the lives of
the suspects, the victims and their families. Its way of showing the story makes
up for a lack of conviction and nuance with a sense of discovery.
5.
Conversations with a
Killer: The Ted Bundy Tapes
This is an American documentary film premiered
in 2019, the 30th anniversary of Bundy’s execution who is an American serial
killer having kidnapped, raped and murdered numerous young women and girls and
he would revisit the victims where he buried their bodies. Bundy is regarded as
handsome and charismatic, traits that he made use of to win the trust of
victims and society. He shows us that people who do evil can be those who we
know and trust the most. The Netflix series dissect Bundy’s crime and the murdering
methodologies that are narrated by Bundy himself, which creeps the audience the
most.
