Italian Films You Want to Know in 76th Annual Venice International Film Festival

Venice Biennale refers to an arts organization based in Venice and the name of the original and principal biennial exhibition the organization presents. As usual, Venice International Film Festival attracts plenty of attention worldwide and there are some famous films selected for the main international competition. Today we are going to introduce some selected Italian films in the competition list of the 76th Annual Venice International Film Festival.






The Mafia Is No Longer What It Used to Be

The Mafia Is No Longer What It Used to Be (Italian: La mafia non è più quella di una volta) is a 2019 Italian satirical documentary film. It was selected to compete for the Golden Lion at the 76th Venice International Film Festival. On the twenty-fifth anniversary of Capaci and via D'Amelio bombings, the Sicilian Mafia murdered anti-mafia judges, Falcone and Borsellino. The director of the film wants to know what's left of their ideals and struggles in contemporary Sicily. And he meets Ciccio Mira again, the shady Mafia-apologist concert organizer that four years earlier had been the subject of his documentary Belluscone. This time, Mira seems a changed man, seeking some kind of redemption by organizing a Neomelodic concert in Palermo in tribute of Falcone and Borsellino.


Martin Eden

Martin Eden is a 2019 Italian-French historical romance drama film, loosely based on the 1909 novel of the same name by Jack London. The casts are including Luca Marinelli as Martin Eden, and Giustiniano Alpi as Arturo Orsini. The film will have its world premiere at the Venice International Film Festival on 2 September 2019. And it will be released in Italy by 01 Distribution on 4 September 2019.


The Mayor of Rione Sanità


The Mayor of Rione Sanità (Italian: Il sindaco del Rione Sanità) is a 2019 Italian crime drama film based on the 1960 play of the same name by Eduardo De Filippo. It's intended as a modern take on the play, inspired by the theatrical adaptation directed by Martone in 2018, with several members of the cast returning. This film is mainly about Antonio Barracano in the Rione Sanità neighborhood of Naples, known as “The Mayor”. He is an undisputed authority amongst both common people and the Camorra, whose job is to settle disputes outside the law, even by unorthodox methods. When he's asked to help a young man determined to kill his father, however, Barracano will have to make a choice regarding his self-imposed moral code. The film will have its world premiere on 30 August 2019 at the Venice International Film Festival. It will have a limited release in Italy from 30 September to 2 October 2019 by Nexo Digital.


Waiting for the Barbarians

This is an upcoming drama film directed by Ciro Guerra in his English-language directorial debut. The film is based on the novel of the same name by J. M. Coetzee. Mark Rylance was announced to star in the film. Depp confirmed in October he would star in the film, and revealed filming was to begin at the end of May, 2018in Morocco, later pinpointed as being October 29.

The Festival also organizes retrospectives and tributes to major figures as a contribution towards a better understanding of the history of cinema.
