Part 1: WandaVision: Plot

Along with the first entry - Loki(2021) premiered in June this year, WandaVision is the second entry of the new Marvel Cinematic Universe(Phase 4). As the biggest superhero franchise in the world, Marvel has produced tons of movies and TV shows that signifies its unique existence - a series of storyline covers more than a decade’s worth of multiple movies interrelated. You may check out the Marvel movie timeline: Watch marvel movies in chronological order for the first three phases of the Marvel cinematic universe.

As for WandaVision (2021), the show picks up where the Avengers: Endgame (2019) left off, which follows the life of superheroes Wanda and Vision. Three weeks after the event of Endgame, the couple moves to Westview, a town in New Jersey. They try to conceal their true identity and enjoy an idyllic life in the suburbs. However, as the period of setting and surroundings change over decades, they realized that their peaceful life was not as they seem.

WandaVision(2021) allows audiences to tap into the nostalgia by setting the couple in the 1950s, in which Wanda is the magic-wielding housewife and Vision is the sentient android, as a homage to the classic US sitcom. The period of time advances with each successive episode when the couple eventually realizes the shadows looming behind the perfect suburban life. The sitcom is merely a mechanism and just a disguise, in contrast to the huge grief and pain that followed when the truth is revealed - the happy couple is nothing but Wanda’s illusion(half-real), even the lively Vision, who has been killed in the events of Avengers: Infinity War(2018).  As she created the whole thing out of tremendous trauma, the Westview town, is never what it seems because it is completely transformed by Wanda’s power.

The familiar Marvel’s elements eventually come to the fore as the puzzle box mystery is resolved. Wanda has to confront the collapse of the perfect life and the challenge of Agatha Witch, who has been playing as her supporting neighbor all along. Wanda, after experiencing all the episodes of WandaVision playing by herself, decided to face the reality - let go of the past, with her grief and pain, and move on.

Part 2: WandaVision: Details

Some episodes of WandaVision contain a commercial which is quite creative and elaborately designed with Marvel’s element. They alluded to the past events that appeared in the Marvel movies or hinted at a plotline. They are also the outlets that represent Wanda’s deepest anxiety and fear. Here’s the breakdown of each commercial and what the key references are.

Episode 1. ToastMate 2000 - Forget the past, this is your future

The commercial advertises for the ToastMate 200, a top-notch toaster made by Stark Industry, which refers to the Stark Industry in the comics. Wanda and Pietro were the enemies of Avengers for the first time they crossed paths because the twin’s family was destroyed by the Stark-branded rocket. The slogan “Forget the past” means she has to forget her resentment and work with Tony Stark and the Avengers. It is a metaphor for her superhero life story as well.

Episode 2. Strücker - He’ll make time for you

The commercial is a reference to Wanda’s past.  Strücker is the name of the scientist working in Hydra(the organization that wants to overturn the government), who awakened Wanda and Pietro’s power. In the commercial, the watch’s face has Hydra’s logo on it. Given Wanda and her brother volunteered for Strücker’s experiment and they are the only survivors of the Mind Stone procedure, it makes sense that Strücker has time for them.

Episode 3. Hydra Soak - Find the goddess within!

This commercial is way too clear for the reference to Hydra, the organization which has been conducting experiments on Mind Stone. The commercial says the Hydra Soak can help to “escape to a world all your own” which refers to the power of Wanda and Mind Stone, that is, reading and manipulating people’s minds. “Find the goddess within” also hints that Wanda’s power has always been with her as Agatha says and unleashed by Hydra.

Episode 5. Lagos paper towels - For when you make a mess you didn’t mean to

Lagos rings a bell because it’s the city in Nigeria that appeared in Captain America: Civil War(2016) when Avengers and Wanda try to stop mercenaries from stealing a biological weapon. When Captain America almost died in the explosion, Wanda used her power to contain the blast and transform the explosion into a building with civilians. These are the casualties/mess she didn’t mean to and make her devastated.

Episode 6. Yo-Magic - The snack for survivors

The Yo-Magic commercial isn’t very straightforward, so it’s open to multiple explanations. A child is stranded on an island and a shark gave him a snack. Yet the food is out of reach so he has to waste away into a skeleton. The kid represented Wanda’s situation, that she is trapped in her reality and there is bigger trouble waiting ahead. The commercial also possibly indicates Wanda’s inability to save Vision in the past.

Episode 7. Nexus - Because the world doesn’t revolve around you. Or does it?

Nexus - antidepressant. The depressed woman in the commercial mirrors Wanda’s situation and Nexus can “anchor you back to the reality or the reality of your choice.” Nexus in the MCU refers to the mystical gateway that links to multiple universes. The Scarlet Witch in the comics is also known as a Nexus being, who belongs equally to all possible timelines. This also refers to Wanda as the anchor that holds the sitcom reality of Westview.

Part 3: MCU Movies Related to WandaVision

Hitherto, more than twenty Marvel movies have been released, and some of them have foreshadowed the WandaVision and Scarlet Witch. Here’s a rundown of the MCU movies related to WandaVision

Captain America: The Winter Soldier(2014)

The debut of twins, Wanda and her brother Pietro, as they appeared briefly in the post-credit scene.

Avengers: Age Of Ultron(2015)

Wanda becomes the key character in the movie. Avengers: Age Of Ultron(2015) reveals how Wanda becomes the hero after joining the forces A.I. robot Ultron. The movie also shows how Tony Stark brings Vision to life with his old AI (J.A.R.V.I.S.) and Mind Stone.

Captain America: Civil War(2016)

The movie shows the early romance of Wanda and Vision when the relationship is budding out, even though they are quickly pushed to opposite sides of Avengers. It’s worth watching to see what Wanda and Vision are like in the early years.

Avengers: Infinity War (2018)

Wanda and Vision had become a couple in this movie, with Vision changing his look to keep them in low profile. Vision gets killed when Thanos turns up to look for the Infinity Stones embedded in his head, and Wanda has been traumatized for years which brings about the story of WandaVision.

Part 4: Where Can You Watch WandaVision?

The first season of WandaVision has ended and all the episodes are now available on Disney+. You will need to have a subscription to Disney+ to enjoy the show. As the newly introduced streaming platform supported by The Walt Disney Company, Disney+ is where you can find a lot of your favorite shows from Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars, and National Geographic. If you are a movie fan, then the subscription seems to be a good deal. For $8 per month, you can not only watch WandaVision but videos on demand using TV, tablet, and phone. If you want to enjoy tons of movies and shows in one place, you can also get the bundle deal of Disney+, Hulu, and ESPN+ for $12.99.

Part 5: How to Watch WandaVision Online for Free?

Unlike Netflix or Hulu, Disney+ doesn’t provide a free trial, so you can’t watch WandaVision for free with it. However, there’s a way for you to enjoy WandaVision for free without a subscription, that is, use Verizon. You are eligible for the “Disney+ on Us'' if you are a Verizon subscriber. Once you have selected Verizon unlimited plans for your household, you can watch the WandaVision on Disney for free. With the subscription, you can stream the show and Disney content with any screen such as Amazon Fire TV 4K Stick, PS4, or Xbox One.

The Bottom Line

WandaVision is not a formulaic superhero show. In essence, it is an emotional drama because the fight scene merely takes up an episode, and it’s considered more of the evolution of Scarlet Witch in a holistic view. But the show is undeniably outstanding as there are few mainstream TV shows like this. At the same time, don’t forget to download the WandaVision using Leawo Video Downloader and watch it with Leawo Blu-ray Video Player(free) if you want to have the best cinematic experience offline!
